MUPE in Beta labs

MUPE was added to NOKIA Beta Labs on 20th December.

The MUPE betalabs version has few improvements over the previous releases. Main visible change comes from Betalabs application signature, which allows it to access the phone resources as a secured application. Check if your version is 3.01a. That's the latest one.

However, the full index of services, which can normally be found using the "Get More" button in the MUPE client, is not yet available. Applications can still be opened using the icons in the client's main screen.

Updated November 19, 2007: The index is available again.

MUPE at MANSEDANSE

During MANSEDANSE electronic music festival MUPE will run a social community service extending the festival into mobile space. MANSEDANSE happens in Tampere, Finland on 4th - 7th October.

During MANSEDANSE electronic music festival there will be a social community service extending the festival into mobile space. The service offers timetable information during the event, mobile discussion forums, event photo sharing and messaging between participants. Share the information with the other visitors to discover all those shadow events around the main show!

The MANSEDANSE service is available through Nokia mobile platform - MUPE. Festival visitors need only install MUPE client into their phone and the service will be available for free subscription, along with all other fine MUPE applications and Games.

Steps to install MUPE to use MANSEDANSE service:

Option 1: Go to www.mupe.net , download the MUPE client and install it to a phone.

Option 2: Share MUPE with the MUPE itself by sending the download link to a friends phone. If you don't have
MUPE, ask around from someone that has it. Or go to back option 1.

In MUPE client the service is visible in what's new. If it's not there for some reasons, press the "Get More" icon
to see the full list of available applications.

Requirements: Java Midp 2.0 compatible phone (tested mostly with Nokia Series 60 phones).

Third time on row, MUPE was on the move to Assembly 2007 held in Helsinki, Finland.

Third time on row, MUPE was on the move to Assembly 2007 held in Helsinki, Finland. The team was once again NRC Toijala, just like every time before. Our aim was just lay around and maybe demonstrate demos if someone seemed interested of them - not just MUPE but other things too.

As usual we hade fun, but most got a bit tired during the event - 4 days in the nerds heaven is exhausting. We demonstrated the MUPE with two games specially customized for the event. We also had an experience point where newest Nokia models could be tested; some of them had MUPE on. Our motto still is: MUPE loves you and don't play with yourself.

Let Saija Simola, one of the Toijala trainees tell her experiences:

It was nice to talk with people and ask what they think about our software and phones. I notice new things about our software, when somebody else used and tested it.

One funny case was, when I saw little boy next to microwave. I ask him if he need help. He open the microwave and said "What is the teaching of the day? Don't never put the hot dog on the plastic wrapping in the microwave." Then he took out of the microwave his hot dog with warm plastic wrapping sad face on his face.

We have couple of MUPE games too. NetBubble winner was one guy and he was really happy to victory. We filmed the award presentation. He got Hesburgers gift tokens. It give happy mood for me too. This competition was two weeks before Assembly Summer 07 and it was exciting to follow how competition progress. Pocket Realms was the other one game. The winner of this competition won N95 phone.

Game programming and code camps with MUPE

This fall several universities are using MUPE in teaching.

Institute of Software Systems at Tampere University of Technology, Finland is organizing a game programming course. There are going to be about twenty groups of two persons and each of them is going to design and implement a simple game with the MUPE platform.

October 8-12 Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland offers a "code camp" programming course focusing on MUPE and mobile community services. During this one-week intensive course students design, implement and evaluate mobile community based applications. Later this year a similar course is to be held in Cairo, Egypt.

Master Server service database enabled, add your own service to listings by filling serverAddress in MupeConfiguration.xml. For example, if you're running your service on services.mupe.net, that's what you'd write on the serverAddress field.

Winter-Assembly is over and the MUPE competition was nothing less than successful: the games worked nicely and we had several competitors for the nice prices.

Winter-Assembly is over and the MUPE competition was nothing less than successful: the games worked nicely and we had several competitors for the nice prices. But who was it on the other side? Let’s give a word for the Assembly team:

The first evening we spent attaching posters and ensuring that MUPE and Winter Assembly game (WA) were in order. After everything seemed to be alright the team was able to in pursuance of observing WA and supporting those, who had questions about WA and MUPE. Popular ways of spending time were playing WoW, ircing, surfing the net and watching videos. Some also watched the finals of Singstar and Guitar Hero.

After few hours of sleep the team woke up not so rested for the new day. At 10 o’clock six persons of us participated in the Wii Boxing competition. After many intense rounds none of us got to the final but atleast we had a great time cheering on every contestant. After quick introduction of WA and the prices most of the group headed to the nearest Subway and Verkkokauppa. During that Opq and Lamperi managed to get to the final from Wii tennis. After the Wii games finals we headed to sauna. The athmosphere was wery tired and mushroomy when we waited for a taxi to Hervanta. When all were relaxed and clean we headed back to Pirkkahalli.

The last night was quite normal; playing and ircing. At two o’clock the organizers of Assembly instructed all of us to go to the soccer field of Pirkkahalli and all over the field there were tickets for Summer Assembly. We didn’t mange to get even one of them, but we inspired to throw Frisbee outside the Pirkkahalli.

After short amount of sleep the last mornig started with opening the loading doors. After few hours it was time for Price ceremony. Opq and Lamperi were thirds in the Wii Tennis competition. When the closing ceremony ended it was time for us to start packing. We said good bye to eachothers and leaved Pirkkahalli with tired, but happy feeling. (Text by Sini Pessala and Juho Itä)

As we can see, everything went quite smoothie, except the sleeping. Minor problems were occurred, but the stability of MUPE was well quite well and gaming experiences were good. The Assembly showed that the platform works, so we shall see MUPE next time on bigger events, collecting more and more players. All, remember that MUPE loves you – and do not play with yourself!
